Aiming for excellence: The journey to Level 5 Leadership
The first time I sit down with a business owner or leader, it’s like opening a book filled with their journey—stories of their founding vision, the rollercoaster of business growth, and the impact of the key metrics that guide their way.
This deep dive into their experiences gives me a glimpse into their leadership style and how effectively they rally their teams toward success. It’s in these conversations that I start to sense whether they’re on track to achieving the success they envision or if they might fall short.
My passion is to partner with high-growth leaders—those I believe have the spark to achieve not only their business dreams but personal ones too. But here’s the thing: creating not just a good company, but a great one, demands honesty about the challenges ahead.
Some leaders, upon realising the effort required, gracefully bow out of strategic thinking, planning and coaching, recognising it’s not the path for them. Others, fuelled by the dream of growth and its long-term rewards, are convinced they have what it takes. These are the leaders who often make impressive strides in the short term, yet sometimes struggle to elevate their business further, either due to decision-making hesitancy or a lack of accountability.
Then, there are those leaders who attribute their success to their team, humble in their achievements, yet fiercely committed to excellence. They’re the ones who, through what they might call ‘good luck,’ propel their businesses to international success with a relentless pursuit of excellence. They have both humility and the will to succeed.
What sets these leaders apart?
Jim Collins’ concept of Level 5 Leadership sheds light on the difference between good leaders and great ones. His research outlines five levels of leadership, suggesting that while one doesn’t need to climb these levels in order, mastering all is essential to reach the pinnacle of leadership. Spotting these traits in potential leaders is crucial as we nurture the next generation of business visionaries.
Many strive to be ‘effective leaders,’ embedding strategy, core purpose, values, and differentiators into their businesses. They pursue their vision with zeal, but when obstacles arise, the drive towards excellence can give way to the comfort of business as usual—settling back into mediocrity.
Do you have the seed of a Level 5 Leader?
According to Collins, some have the innate seed of Level 5 Leadership; others do not. Without this seed, reaching the apex of leadership is unlikely. Leaders focused on personal status or who credit themselves alone for successes might lack this crucial seed. However, for those with the seed, nurturing it through self-reflection, mentorship, strong support networks, and significant life experiences can foster growth into a Level 5 Leader.
Cultivating Level 5 Leadership
For those determined to grow, embracing the Good to Great principles is key:
- People First: Get the right team on the bus, then define your direction.
- Stockdale Paradox: Maintain unwavering faith in your success while confronting the harsh realities of your current situation.
- Gain Flywheel Momentum: Identify and consistently apply the key drivers of your business to build momentum.
- The Hedgehog Concept: The hedgehog simply does one thing well. Focus on what you do best, driven by your passion and what drives your economic engine.
- Stay Ahead with Technology and Trends: Leverage the latest to enhance your business performance.
- Foster a Culture of Accountability: With the right people and plan, consistent accountability is essential.
